I have had many long distance relationships and have found that the key (and in my opinion the only way to make it work) is to communicate.
Being apart for days or weeks or even living in different countries is not the best condition for a relationship; I mean, who am I kidding, right?
But it IS possible. It takes a lot of extra work and one has to be very sure that this particular person is the right one for you.
Being apart for long periods of times leaves so much more room for misunderstandings, jealousy, assumption etc. And what I have learned is that writing emails and/or sms is definitely not the way to communicate during times of not being with one another. In this day and age, where we have all kinds of wonderful devices, like the iphone with facetime, or online services such as skype, it is best to talk to each other while seeing the your partners facial expression, the way he looks at you and behaves. This is take away a lot of the tension and it will reduce the risk of miscommunication. Of course, there are also some other benefits of seeing each other via video... ;)
